Eight Chapters

שמונה פרקים (Shemonah Perakim)

Retrato imaginario de Maimónides (Ugolini, 1744)
byMaimonides

Ethical introduction to tractate *Avot*, inspired by Aristotle and al-Farabi, which Maimonides presents as medicine for the soul. It describes the faculties of the soul, the virtues as habits of the mean and the vices as extremes, the cure of vices by the opposite excess, human freedom against astrology and divine foreknowledge, and prophecy as the fruit of moral and intellectual perfection. In the introduction he declares that he gathered his ideas from the sages and the philosophers, for one must hear the truth from whoever speaks it.
