Epistle on Martyrdom (Iggeret ha-Shemad) — Maimonides

Correspondence

Epistle on Martyrdom (Iggeret ha-Shemad)

אגרת השמד / מאמר קידוש השם

Retrato imaginario de Maimónides (Ugolini, 1744)
byMaimonides

Reply to a rabbi who had declared that Jews outwardly uttering the Islamic profession of faith under the Almohads were apostates and that their prayers were worthless. The author argues that under coercion it is better to emigrate, but that whoever yields out of fear does not lose his Jewish status and must go on observing the commandments in secret. Its attribution to Maimonides is traditional; Herbert Davidson has questioned it.
