A stanza-by-stanza commentary on the poem, reading the Bride's itinerary as the passage from the purgative to the illuminative and unitive ways, with long meditations on the beauty of creatures as the Beloved's trace. It is the most lyrical of his treatises.

Authorship note
Authentic; included in all critical editions. First redaction of the commentary (39 stanzas), completed in Granada in 1584 and dedicated to Ana de Jesús; the Sanlúcar de Barrameda manuscript bears autograph corrections. First published in French translation (Paris, 1622) and in Spanish in Brussels (1627).
