The Gospel according to Matthew

Τὸ κατὰ Ματθαῖον εὐαγγέλιον

Cristo Pantocrátor del Sinaí
byJesus of Nazareth

The gospel the early Church placed first and the most quoted in the liturgy. It organises Jesus's teaching into five great discourses, the first being the Sermon on the Mount (chs. 5–7), with the beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer and the golden rule. It presents Jesus as a new Moses and the fulfilment of Israel's Scriptures, with frequent fulfilment quotations, and opens with its own genealogy and infancy narrative (the magi, the flight into Egypt). It ends with the sending of the disciples to all nations.

Authorship note

Anonymous. Tradition attributes it to the apostle Matthew, the tax collector; Papias says that Matthew "arranged the sayings in the Hebrew language". Scholarship regards it as a Greek work of c. 80–90, probably composed in Syria by a Jewish-Christian author who used Mark and the Q sayings source, besides material of his own.
