The Gospel according to John

Τὸ κατὰ Ἰωάννην εὐαγγέλιον

Cristo Pantocrátor del Sinaí
byJesus of Nazareth

Very different from the other three: it begins with a prologue on the Logos that "became flesh", replaces the parables with long discourses and seven "signs" (water turned into wine, the raising of Lazarus), and puts in Jesus's mouth the "I am" sayings (the bread of life, the light of the world, the way, the truth and the life). It places the cleansing of the Temple at the beginning and the crucifixion on the eve of Passover. It has been the main source of Christian Christology and mysticism.

Authorship note

Anonymous. The text appeals to the testimony of the "beloved disciple" (21:24); tradition, since Irenaeus, identifies him with the apostle John. Scholarship regards it as the product of a community, composed in several stages between c. 90 and 110, with a final chapter added. Its long discourses of Jesus are generally considered theological compositions of the evangelist.
