La autobiografía intelectual de al-Ghazali, escrita como respuesta a un «hermano en la fe» que le pregunta cómo llegó a la verdad. Narra su crisis escéptica, curada por una luz que Dios puso en su pecho, y examina las cuatro clases de buscadores —teólogos, filósofos, ismailíes y sufíes— para concluir que solo la vía sufí, que se conoce por experiencia y no por definición, da certeza. Relata también su salida de Bagdad y su vuelta a la enseñanza. Se ha comparado a menudo con las *Confesiones* de san Agustín.
