German Sermons (complete corpus)

Predigten (deutsche Predigten)

Fraile dominico identificado tradicionalmente con Eckhart (Andrea di Bonaiuto, Via Veritatis)
byMeister Eckhart

More than a hundred sermons preached mainly to nuns and beguines, commenting on the Gospel or Epistle of the day. In them the theses for which Eckhart is known are formulated: the birth of the Son in the ground of the soul, the uncreated spark, poverty of spirit, the Godhead beyond God. Their language, at once popular and abstract, is a landmark of German prose.

Authorship note

The corpus of German sermons recognised by the critical edition: Sermons 1–86 in DW I–III (Josef Quint, 1958–1976) and Georg Steer's continuation in DW IV from Sermon 87 (2003–). None survives in autograph; Pfeiffer (1857) had published 110 sermons, several now excluded. The main anthologies (Walshe, Quint 1955) use their own numbering.
