Fragments (Diels-Kranz 22 B 1–126)

Heraclitus

The corpus of verbatim quotations that modern philology ascribes to Heraclitus, some 125 sentences grouped as DK 22 B, together with the indirect testimonies (DK 22 A). They come from authors who quoted them for their own purposes: Hippolytus of Rome (who transmits B1 and the series B50–B67), Clement of Alexandria, Plutarch, Sextus Empiricus, Diogenes Laertius, Stobaeus, Marcus Aurelius, Porphyry, Origen and others. Each quotation raises problems of delimitation—where Heraclitus' sentence ends and paraphrase begins—and of dialect. Later editions (Marcovich 1967, Kahn 1979, Mouraviev 1999–2011, Laks and Most 2016) rearrange the material, but the DK reference remains universal.
