Published in four parts while he was Bishop of Tambov, these letter-treatises set out the path of the Christian life to an ideal addressee: vocation, conversion, the struggle against temptation and faint-heartedness, the last end of man. They are Theophan's first book of spiritual direction and announce the epistolary style that would dominate his work.
