Protagoras — Socrates

Recorded oral teaching

Protagoras

Πρωταγόρας

Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

At the house of the wealthy Callias, Socrates confronts the most famous sophist, Protagoras of Abdera, over whether virtue can be taught. Protagoras answers with a myth and a long speech; Socrates demands brief questions and answers. In the end the roles are reversed: Socrates maintains that all the virtues are knowledge, and therefore teachable. It is one of Plato's liveliest and most theatrical pieces.

Authorship note

A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him.
