Socrates
Ion
Recorded oral teaching
Ion
Ἴων

A short conversation with Ion of Ephesus, a rhapsode who has just won a contest reciting Homer. Socrates shows him that he possesses not a skill but a divine inspiration passing from the Muse to the poet, from the poet to the rhapsode and from the rhapsode to the audience, like magnetism through iron rings.

Authorship note
A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him.
