Phaedo
Φαίδων

Account of Socrates' last day, told by Phaedo of Elis to Echecrates at Phlius. Socrates talks with the Thebans Simmias and Cebes, who had frequented Pythagoreans, about why the philosopher does not fear death, and sets out four arguments for the immortality of the soul and a myth about the fate of souls. The dialogue closes with the death scene: the bath, the farewell to his family, the cup of poison and the last words to Crito about the cock owed to Asclepius (118a).

Authorship note
A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him. Plato was not present (59b): the narrator is Phaedo of Elis. The proofs of the soul's immortality and the theory of Forms are, for most scholars, Platonic doctrine placed in Socrates' mouth.
