Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

A party at Callias' house in 422 BCE. Between performances by dancers and acrobats, the guests explain what each is proudest of; Socrates jokingly boasts of his skill as a matchmaker and of his ugliness, and gives a speech on the love of the soul, superior to that of the body. It is the genial, humorous face of Xenophon's Socrates.

Authorship note

A work by Xenophon (c. 430–354 BCE), a pupil of Socrates in his youth, who was in Asia at the time of the trial. It mixes his own memories, others' reports and literary elaboration with an apologetic aim. The author claims to have attended the banquet, which is unlikely given his age.
