Apology of Socrates (Xenophon)
Ἀπολογία Σωκράτους πρὸς τοὺς δικαστάς

A short version of the trial that dwells on the "lofty speech" (megalegoria) of Socrates' defence and explains it: he had decided it was better to die than to endure old age, and his divine sign had not opposed it. It differs from Plato's Apology in tone and several details, and is essential for the Socratic problem.

Authorship note
A work by Xenophon (c. 430–354 BCE), a pupil of Socrates in his youth, who was in Asia at the time of the trial. It mixes his own memories, others' reports and literary elaboration with an apologetic aim. He says he relies on what Hermogenes, son of Hipponicus, reported.
