The Lankavatara Sutra
Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra

A dialogue between the Buddha and the bodhisattva Mahamati on the island of Lanka, bringing together the doctrines of "mind only" (cittamatra), the storehouse consciousness (alayavijñana) and buddha-nature (tathagatagarbha). Chan tradition claims Bodhidharma handed it to his successor Huike, and it was the reference scripture of early Chan before the Diamond Sutra replaced it.

Authorship note
A Mahayana sutra that puts its teachings in the Buddha's mouth. Scholarship regards it as a composition long after his death by anonymous authors of the Mahayana movements; it is attributed to the historical Gotama only through the formula "Thus have I heard". Probably composed between the third and fifth centuries; its earliest surviving Chinese translation is Gunabhadra's (443).
