The letters of spiritual direction Theophan wrote from Vysha—twenty to forty a day in his last years—to monks, nuns, priests, laypeople of every station, families and the sick. They deal with prayer and the Jesus Prayer, confession and communion, marriage and education, sickness and death, the sects and atheism of his day, with a characteristic mixture of tenderness, practical sense and doctrinal severity. Published after his death in eight parts (1898–1901), with over 1,400 pieces, they remain the main route by which he is read in Russia.
