Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

In a newly opened wrestling school Socrates talks with the boys Lysis and Menexenus about friendship: is the friend the one who loves, the beloved, like of like, opposite of opposite? The successive hypotheses fail and the dialogue closes by noting that they have thought themselves friends without knowing what a friend is.

Authorship note

A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him.
