Library Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

The Diamond Sutra
Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra (金剛經)

A dialogue between the Buddha and his disciple Subhuti on the perfection of wisdom. Through paradoxes ("what is called X is not X; therefore it is called X") it teaches not to cling to any notion, not even that of beings to be saved or of the Buddha himself. Widely read in Chan and Zen, its printed copy from Dunhuang dated 868 (British Library) is the oldest surviving dated printed book.

Authorship note
A Mahayana sutra that puts its teachings in the Buddha's mouth. Scholarship regards it as a composition long after his death by anonymous authors of the Mahayana movements; it is attributed to the historical Gotama only through the formula "Thus have I heard". It belongs to the Perfection of Wisdom literature and is usually dated between the second and fifth centuries; Kumarajiva's Chinese translation dates from c. 401.
