Library Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

Later compilation
Digha Nikaya (The Long Discourses)
Dīgha Nikāya

Thirty-four long discourses of the Sutta Pitaka, markedly narrative and polemical: debates with brahmins and rival ascetics (Samaññaphala, Brahmajala), cosmologies, the lives of past buddhas (Mahapadana, where the four encounters appear told of Vipassi) and the account of the Buddha's last months (Mahaparinibbana). It is the main source for the Buddha's public figure and for the image the community wished to give of him to other schools.

Authorship note
The Buddha wrote nothing. The discourses were transmitted orally for centuries by specialised reciters and committed to writing in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; authorship is collective and attribution to the Buddha traditional. Scholarship distinguishes early strata from later additions by comparing the Pali canon with its Chinese, Sanskrit and Tibetan parallels.
