Epistle to Yemen

אגרת תימן (Iggeret Teiman)

Retrato imaginario de Maimónides (Ugolini, 1744)
byMaimonides

Letter to Jacob ben Netanel, leader of the Jews of Yemen, who were suffering forced conversions under a Shiite ruler and the agitation of a man presenting himself as Messiah. Maimonides consoles them, explains the persecutions as trials, argues against Christianity and Islam, advises against calculating the date of redemption (though he passes on a family tradition about it) and declares the would-be Messiah an impostor. It was soon translated into Hebrew and secured Maimonides lasting veneration in Yemen.
