The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew

Liber de ortu beatae Mariae et infantia Salvatoris

Cristo Pantocrátor del Sinaí
byJesus of Nazareth

A medieval Latin version of the infancy stories of Mary and Jesus, with new episodes from the flight into Egypt: the palm tree that bows to give its fruit to the Holy Family, the dragons and wild beasts that worship the child. It was the channel through which these legends reached Western art and piety.

Authorship note

An anonymous Latin compilation, introduced by a spurious exchange of letters with Jerome attributing it to Matthew; it is dated to the seventh century. It reworks the Protevangelium of James and the Infancy Gospel of Thomas.
