The Gospel of Peter

Εὐαγγέλιον κατὰ Πέτρον

Cristo Pantocrátor del Sinaí
byJesus of Nazareth

The surviving fragment narrates the trial, crucifixion and resurrection. It lays responsibility for the condemnation on Herod and the Jews rather than on Pilate, and describes Jesus's emergence from the tomb: two gigantic figures support him, followed by a speaking cross. On the cross Jesus exclaims: "My power, O power, you have left me", a variant of Mark's words.

Authorship note

Attributed to the apostle Peter, who narrates in the first person. It is known mainly from a fragment of the Akhmim codex (Egypt, found 1886–1887, a copy of the sixth to ninth centuries). Serapion of Antioch rejected it around 200 for its docetic tendencies (Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 6.12). Scholarship dates it to the second century; whether it depends on the canonical gospels is debated.
