Ignatius of Loyola
Deliberation of the First Fathers
Traditional attribution
Deliberation of the First Fathers
Deliberatio primorum Patrum

A short document narrating how the Paris companions, faced with the dispersal imposed on them by papal missions, deliberated in prayer for weeks on whether to constitute themselves as a religious order with a superior. It is the first example of communal discernment according to the method of the Exercises.

Authorship note
Collective record of the sessions of March–June 1539 in Rome. It is not Ignatius's personal work: the drafting has been attributed to Pierre Favre or Jean Codure, and it records the group's decisions, including that of binding themselves by a vow of obedience.
