Commentaries on the principal Upaniṣads

उपनिषद्भाष्य (Īśa, Kena, Kaṭha, Praśna, Muṇḍaka, Aitareya, Taittirīya)

Śaṅkara con sus discípulos, de Raja Ravi Varma
byAdi Shankara

Commentaries on the shorter Upaniṣads of the canon, from the Īśā to the Taittirīya. In them Śaṅkara develops his exegesis of the "great sayings", distinguishes higher from lower knowledge and explains the Taittirīya's five sheaths (pañcakośa) as a method for separating the self from what is not the self. The Kena has two commentaries, one word by word and one sentence by sentence, a case unique in his work.

Authorship note

Mayeda regards the commentaries on these seven Upaniṣads as authentic (including the double commentary on the Kena); the one ascribed to the Śvetāśvatara is treated separately as spurious.
