Enneads
Ἐννεάδες

The complete works of Plotinus. Porphyry arranged them from the simplest subject to the most exalted: Ennead I deals with ethics and man; II with the physical world; III with providence, fate, time and love; IV with the soul; V with Intellect; VI with the kinds of being and the One. Each treatise carries in brackets its number in the chronological order that Porphyry himself preserved in the Life (4–6), which allows three periods to be distinguished: treatises 1–21 (up to 263), 22–45 (263–268) and 46–54 (268–270). It is the source of ancient Neoplatonism and one of the foundational texts of Western mysticism.

Authorship note
The fifty-four treatises are by Plotinus; the division into six groups of nine (enneads), the thematic order, many of the titles and the splitting of some long treatises are the work of his pupil Porphyry, who published them around 301. Eusebius of Caesarea and the scholia know remains of another edition, by Eustochius, now lost.
