Yājñavalkya-kāṇḍa (Muni-kāṇḍa): the debate at Janaka's court and the teachings to the king

याज्ञवल्कीयकाण्ड / मुनिकाण्ड (Bṛhadāraṇyaka 3–4)

Yājñavalkya con el rey Janaka (relieve)
byYajnavalkya

Chapter 3 narrates the contest at the sacrifice of Janaka of Videha: Yājñavalkya answers Aśvala, Ārtabhāga, Bhujyu, Uṣasta, Kahola, Gārgī Vācaknavī, Uddālaka Āruṇi and Vidagdha Śākalya on ritual, death, karma, the "inner controller" (antaryāmin) and the imperishable (akṣara). Chapter 4 records his conversations with Janaka: the light of man, the states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep, death and rebirth, desire and liberation, and the doctrine of the ātman as "not this, not this". It ends with the second version of the dialogue with Maitreyī.

Authorship note

The central section of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka (chapters 3 and 4), which tradition regards as Yājñavalkya's own teaching. Scholars read it as a literary composition built around his figure (Black 2007; Lindquist 2011).
