The 104 hymns of the seventh book of the Ṛgveda, one of the 'family books'. They include hymns to Agni, Indra, Uṣas, the Maruts and Mitra-Varuṇa; the chronicle of the Battle of the Ten Kings (7.18, 7.33, 7.83); the account of Vasiṣṭha's birth (7.33); the confessional hymns to Varuṇa (7.86–89); the mantra to Tryambaka (7.59.12), still recited as the 'mahāmṛtyuñjaya', and the hymn of the frogs (7.103). It is one of the oldest strata of Indian literature.

Authorship note

The anukramaṇī (traditional index of authors) ascribes the book to Vasiṣṭha Maitrāvaruṇi and his descendants. It is the work of a family of poets over several generations, orally transmitted and fixed much later; it cannot be assigned to an individual.
