Spiritual Instructions to Laypeople and Monks

Духовные наставления мирянам и инокам

Retrato de Serafín de Sarov pintado en vida
bySeraphim of Sarov

Short chapters on God, faith, hope, prayer, tears, sorrow and despondency, peace of soul and its preservation, guarding the heart, the light of Christ, attention to oneself, silence, fasting and the active and contemplative life, with advice for the novice and for the superior. Woven from quotations of Isaac the Syrian, John Climacus, Barsanuphius, Gregory of Sinai, Ephrem and John Chrysostom, they convey a sober hesychast teaching: the Jesus Prayer repeated in the mind, inner peace as the condition of all light, and caution towards contemplation without a guide. It is the earliest and least manipulated source of his teaching.

Authorship note

Taken down orally by the Sarov monk Sergius (Vasiliev), who also wrote the first life (1837). Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow corrected them before printing: on 2 August 1838 he wrote that he had changed or supplemented expressions so that the language should be more correct and to guard against misunderstanding ideas expressed in an unusual way. They were published in 1839 within the life of the hermit Mark. The number and order of chapters vary by edition: about 33 in the original, 30 in Elagin and Chichagov, 43 in Denisov (1904).
