The Mawangdui Laozi (silk copies A and B)

馬王堆帛書《老子》甲本、乙本

Laozi cabalgando un buey
byLaozi

Both copies place the part on Virtue (De) before that on the Way (Dao), lack chapter divisions and present hundreds of variants against Wang Bi's text, many minor and some weighty (such as "the Way is great" instead of "Heaven is great" in chapter 25). Published in 1980 by Wenwu, they formed the basis of Henricks's translation (1989) and revolutionised study of the text.

Authorship note

Two complete silk copies found in 1973 in Mawangdui tomb 3 (sealed 168 BCE). Copy A, in small seal script, does not avoid the taboo name of the Han founder (Bang) and predates 195 BCE; copy B, in clerical script, avoids it and dates from the following years.
