Bijak

बीजक (Bījak)

Kabir y Ravidas
byKabir

Scripture of the Kabirpanthis: didactic *ramainis*, *shabdas* (songs) and *sakhis* (couplets), plus some popular forms. It is the most polemical and disconcerting Kabir, that of the direct attacks on caste, rites and sacred books, and of the *ulatbansi*, 'upside-down language' riddles that jolt the listener's mind. Linda Hess and Shukdev Singh translated it in full in 1983, and their edition remains the English reference.

Authorship note

A compilation of the eastern tradition of the Kabir Panth of Benares, held to be the oldest and most genuine version, although its oldest surviving manuscript is no earlier than the beginning of the nineteenth century (Strnad) and there are two main recensions. Few of its verses coincide with those of the Sikh and Dadupanthi collections. It was not fixed by Kabir, who composed orally.
