Shōbōgenzō (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye)

正法眼蔵

Dōgen contemplando la luna (Tsukimi no zō)
byDōgen

Dōgen's major work and one of the summits of Buddhist thought. Its fascicles, preached or written over twenty-two years, comment on kōans, sutras and sayings of Chinese masters in a deliberately twisted Japanese that breaks Chinese syntax to make the texts say what, in his view, they really say. It treats the oneness of practice and realisation, buddha-nature as impermanence, being-time, Dharma transmission, zazen and monastic life down to its most concrete details. It was little read outside his school until the 20th century.

Authorship note

Dōgen's work, written in Japanese between 1231 and 1253. He himself arranged the 75-fascicle collection (and earlier a 60-fascicle one) and began a new one of 12; later compilers formed versions of 28, 84, 89 and 95 fascicles. The printed Eiheiji edition (1815) fixed the 95-fascicle version, the basis of modern editions; current scholarship prefers 75 + 12 plus separate texts.
