Tannishō (A Record in Lament of Divergences)
歎異抄

A short book of eighteen chapters with preface and epilogue, the most read text of the tradition. It contains the most famous sayings attributed to Shinran: "if even a good person attains birth, how much more the evil person!", that he has not a single disciple, that he never recited the nembutsu for his parents, or that the Vow, properly considered, was "for me, Shinran, alone". Popularised from the Meiji era, it influenced 20th-century Japanese philosophers and writers.

Authorship note
Not by Shinran: it was compiled, some twenty-five years after his death, by his disciple Yuien (1222–1289), identified as author by modern scholarship. The first ten chapters record sayings of the master that Yuien says he heard; the following ones, his criticism of deviations. The oldest manuscript is a copy by Rennyo, who restricted its reading.
