Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad (The Great Forest Upaniṣad)

Yajnavalkya

The longest and probably the oldest of the Upaniṣads. It is traditionally divided into three sections: the Madhu-kāṇḍa (chapters 1–2), with the first dialogue between Yājñavalkya and Maitreyī; the Muni- or Yājñavalkya-kāṇḍa (3–4), with the debate at Janaka's court and the teachings to the king on the light of the ātman, the states of consciousness, death and "neti neti"; and the Khila-kāṇḍa (5–6), a supplement of doctrines and rites ending with the lists of teachers. It is the main source for the early form of the doctrine of karma and rebirth, and one of the textual foundations of Vedānta.
