The saṃhitā of the "white" Yajurveda, so called because it separates the formulas (yajus) from their prose explanation, which is reserved for the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, unlike the "black" Yajurveda. It has forty chapters with the formulas of the great solemn rites; the last is the Īśā Upaniṣad. It survives in the Mādhyandina and Kāṇva recensions.

Authorship note

A collection of sacrificial formulas whose transmission tradition attributes to Yājñavalkya, who is said to have received it from the Sun (Bṛhadāraṇyaka 6.5.3; Viṣṇu Purāṇa 3.5). Like every Vedic text it is regarded as "not of human authorship" (apauruṣeya); the attribution is traditional.
