Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa (The Brāhmaṇa of a Hundred Paths)

शतपथब्राह्मण (Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa)

Yājñavalkya con el rey Janaka (relieve)
byYajnavalkya

The longest of the Vedic prose treatises on sacrifice. It explains, rite by rite, the meaning of the new- and full-moon offerings, the soma sacrifice, the great fire altar (agnicayana), royal consecration and the horse sacrifice, and includes famous narratives such as the flood and Manu, Purūravas and Urvaśī, and Videgha Māthava, which tells of the eastward spread of the sacrificial fire. Its later books contain the first speculative debates (brahmodya) involving Yājñavalkya, Uddālaka Āruṇi and Janaka.

Authorship note

A collective work of the Vājasaneyin school of the White Yajurveda, in Mādhyandina (14 kāṇḍas) and Kāṇva (17) recensions. Yājñavalkya is the authority quoted in kāṇḍas 1–5 and 11–13 and the protagonist of book 14 (the Bṛhadāraṇyaka); kāṇḍas 6–10 rely on Śāṇḍilya. Witzel suggests he may have taken part in redacting the saṃhitā; tradition attributes the whole school to him.
