Rāmāyaṇa (The Journey of Rāma)
रामायण (Rāmāyaṇa)

Sanskrit epic of some twenty-four thousand stanzas, according to tradition, in seven books: Bāla, Ayodhyā, Araṇya, Kiṣkindhā, Sundara, Yuddha and Uttara. It narrates the life of Rāma, prince of Ayodhyā: his fourteen-year exile, the abduction of his wife Sītā by Rāvaṇa, king of Laṅkā, the alliance with the monkeys and with Hanumān, the war and the return to the throne. A model of learned poetry (kāvya) and of the ideal of dharma, it is the source of hundreds of versions across Asia.

Authorship note
Tradition ascribes it to Vālmīki, who appears in the poem itself as its author and as a character. Philology regards it as a work of oral composition and staged growth: a core in books II–VI (eighth to fifth centuries BCE according to Goldman; from the fifth century BCE according to Brockington) and books I and VII added in the first centuries CE. The existence of an individual author cannot be proved.
