Gaṅgāṣṭaka (Eight Stanzas to the Ganges)
Traditional attribution
Gaṅgāṣṭaka (Eight Stanzas to the Ganges)
गङ्गाष्टकम् (Gaṅgāṣṭakam)

An eight-stanza hymn in praise of the Ganges, recited in worship, belonging to the abundant stotra literature placed under the names of ancient sages. Its attribution to Vālmīki is explained by the prestige of the ādikavi and by the account of the descent of the Ganges in the Bālakāṇḍa.

Authorship note
A devotional hymn that tradition ascribes to Vālmīki; a late attribution without philological basis.
