Rāma seals an alliance with Sugrīva, the dispossessed king of the monkeys, and kills his brother Vālin by shooting him from hiding, an episode commentators have debated for centuries. After the rainy season, the monkeys set out in search of Sītā in the four directions; the southern party, with Hanumān, learns from the vulture Sampāti that she is in Laṅkā.
