The third life, with a sketch of the life of Agafia Melgunova, founder of Diveyevo, and the testimonies of the nun Matrona Pleshcheyeva and the monk Peter about the bear Seraphim fed. It is the written origin of the saint's most popular image.

Authorship note
By Hieromonk Joasaph, who lived thirteen years at Sarov as the novice Ivan Tikhonov; St Petersburg, 1849 (reprinted 1856 and 1877). Rochcau considers it of limited value, and a file in Metropolitan Philaret's archive documents that he invented the bear story.
