Nāgārjuna
Hymn to the Dharmadhātu
Traditional attribution
Hymn to the Dharmadhātu
धर्मधातुस्तव (Dharmadhātustava); tib. Chos kyi dbyings su bstod pa

A hymn of about a hundred verses comparing the ultimate nature of the mind to butter hidden in milk or a lamp inside a jar, which shines when the jar is broken. It states that this nature is present in all beings, covered by the afflictions, and that the path consists in uncovering it.

Authorship note
Ascribed to Nāgārjuna in the Tibetan canon; its doctrine of a luminous nature hidden in all beings brings it close to tathāgatagarbha literature, and many specialists regard it as later. The Tibetan "gzhan stong" tradition invokes it.
