Seven Meditations on the Lord's Prayer

Siete meditaciones sobre el Paternóster

Retrato de Santa Teresa de Jesús por fray Juan de la Miseria (1576)
byTeresa of Ávila

Seven meditations, one for each day of the week, on the petitions of the Lord's Prayer, which circulated for centuries under Teresa's name and were even put into verse. Their presence in early editions explains why they are still quoted as hers; they are listed here as a spurious attribution.

Authorship note

Spurious. It was published by Jerónimo Gracián and included in the Plantin edition of Teresa's works (Antwerp, 1630), with a preamble claiming it came from a notebook owned by Isabel de Avellaneda; modern scholarship holds it is not Teresa's. The year marks its entry into the printed works, not its composition.
