It covers the baccalauréat philosophy syllabus —perception, language, science, ethics, sociology— from Alain's perspective and her own materialism of work. It is the fullest portrait of Weil as a teacher and of her thought before the religious turn.

Course given at the Roanne lycée in 1933–1934, reconstructed from the notes of her pupil Anne Reynaud-Guérithault and published by Plon in 1959.
