Part of his exchange of letters with Theophan the Recluse: the text brings together the letter in which Theophan judges unorthodox the idea of a material, ethereal nature of the soul and angels—admitting at most a subtle envelope that is not their essence—and the reply in which Ignatius justifies his term 'ethereal' from the Fathers.
