Reflections on Church Painting

Размышления о живописи церковной

Retrato de Ignati Brianchanínov
byIgnatius Brianchaninov

An analysis of two cartoons prepared in 1847 by Fyodor Bruni and F. Riss for the paintings of St Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg ('He Who Is' and 'St Sergius Blesses Dmitry Donskoy'): Ignatius acknowledges the loftiness of the subjects but judges that the execution does not answer to the canons of Orthodox iconography—angels without reverence, angels in female form—or to the spirit of church art.
