Retrato de Santa Teresa de Jesús por fray Juan de la Miseria (1576)
byTeresa of Ávila

Occasional poetry and poetry of divine love in traditional metres (villancicos, glosas, coplas), made to be sung: 'I live without living in myself', 'Sighs of exile', 'I am yours, for you I was born', 'Let nothing disturb you'. Without John of the Cross's formal ambition, it has the grace of popular Castilian lyric and a memorability that has turned some lines into universal mottoes.
