A letter to the painter Karl Bryullov, whom he knew at the St Sergius hermitage around 1845–1846, when Bryullov was painting a Trinity icon for it. The art historian Grigory Goldovsky has linked his advice to seek 'a painting from eternity' to the painter's Christ in the Tomb.
