Ἐπιστολαί

Mosaico de Diógenes (Colonia)
byDiogenes of Sinope

Correspondence that antiquity held to be genuine and that still circulated in the Hellenistic age: Diogenes Laertius reports, on its basis, that the philosopher asked someone to find him a cottage and, as it was slow in coming, settled in the jar in the Metroon. It is the only title the two ancient lists share without dispute, together with a few dialogues.

Authorship note

Lost work. The letters appear in both Diogenes Laertius' list and Sotion's (VI 80), and Laertius cites "his letters" as the source for the episode of the jar (VI 23). None survives; the transmitted Cynic Epistles are spurious.
