Euthyphro
Plato
At the door of the court where he is to answer the charge of impiety, Socrates meets Euthyphro, a seer about to prosecute his own father for homicide. Socrates asks him to define the pious, and each answer collapses under examination. It poses the question theology would carry for centuries: is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or pious because the gods love it? The first piece of the tetralogy of the trial.
