Meditations on the Song of Songs

Meditaciones sobre los Cantares (Conceptos del amor de Dios)

Retrato de Santa Teresa de Jesús por fray Juan de la Miseria (1576)
byTeresa of Ávila

A commentary, unpublished in her lifetime and risky for a sixteenth-century woman, on verses of the Song of Songs ('Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth', 'Thy breasts are better than wine'). Teresa reads the poem as a description of the prayer of quiet and of union, with an exegetical freedom the Inquisition would not have tolerated in a printed book. It is the clearest witness to her direct reading of Scripture in the vernacular.
