Gog and Magog (For the Sake of Heaven)

Gog u-Magog / Gog und Magog

Retrato de Martin Buber
byMartin Buber

His only novel, first published in Hebrew and then in English (*For the Sake of Heaven*, 1945) and German (1949). It narrates the real conflict between two Hasidic masters of the early nineteenth century, the Seer of Lublin, who wanted to force redemption by exploiting the Napoleonic wars, and his disciple the Holy Jew of Przysucha, who sought it in the turning of the heart. A meditation on political messianism written during the Second World War.
